Fuel saver

Would you like to run your car partly on water? Recently I was giving a guy a lift home and he said to me, “Can I buy you some petrol?” I said, “No, that’s all right mate”. And he replied, knowing I had an electrolyser installed, “Well then, can I buy you some water?”
In these difficult times you may not be able to save money by breaking that high fixed rate mortgage to get a lower rate, or save on your rates, power or gas bills, or on your food bills,or other fixed or household costs; but there is one substantial household budget cost that you can save on: your petrol costs! Brown’s gas electrolysers are a relatively simple and inexpensive technology that was invented 200 years ago, so the patent is now in the public domain. This means anyone can freely use it without having to pay any royalties to the inventor for the patent.

Hydrogen gas is well known to be a very combustable fuel. For example the space shuttle uses it on lift off. (See Hydrogen fuel on Wikipedia). Many car companies have also been working on hydrogen powered prototype cars recently. However the designs used involve the use of expensive car fuel tanks to store the hydrogen in, which means they are dependant on the development of a hugely expensive public infrastructure of hydrogen filling stations.With such problems as these the use of this highly combustable fuel is not progressing well.

Brown’s gas electrolysers, on the other hand, overcome these difficulties by providing a simple and inexpensive hydrogen on demand technology. When you turn the key on in your car and start the engine, these electrolysers start producing hydrogen; and when you turn the key off, they stop. It is that simple: no need for expensive hydrogen fuel tanks or a public infrastructure of hydrogen pump filling stations.The Brown’s gas electrolyser produces and uses the hydrogen the car needs as it runs and therefore does not need to store it.

Brown’s gas electrolysers, unknown to most, are actually part of our DIY history and culture of kiwi ingenuity. I was talking to an elderly chap recently who was a mechanic in the 1950s. He said that he used to work on these things and, in fact, there were a number of these sort of ingenious devices in those days which were called “octane boosters”. They were needed because the inferior quality of petrol and oil in those days caused poor engine performance and short engine life. However, with the advent of leaded petrol, Redex, and multigrade oils, engine performance and life improved and the octane boosters went out of fashion, the price of petrol not being an important issue in those days like it is now.

So what are Brown’s gas electrolysers? Briefly, they are a container with a lid, which has a mixture of about a litre of distilled water and half a teaspoon of high grade baking soda in it as a catalyst for the electrolysis process. (I use Pure Dew distilled water from the supermarket, medical grade baking soda from the pharmacy and a 1 litre Agee preserving jar as a container). This is attached in the engine bay of the car.

The lid has two electrical terminals attached to it, a live and an earth, which are immersed in the water. The live terminal is made out of Nickel Titanium wire, ($30 a terminal), imported from the USA, which is non corroding, because the live terminal attracts the corrosive hydrogen gas. for a less expensive live terminal, about $2, use 316L stainless steel wire. However this causes a ruty sedement in the jar which needs to be cleaned out about every 1000km. The earth terminal is made out of mig welding wire, 316LSI low corrosion stainless steel, about $3 per terminal, which attracts the less corrosive oxygen gas.

When an electric current is passed through the wires, (which current is produced by the car’s own alternator), the water in the jar, H2O, is electrolysed by the electric current catalysed by the baking soda, which means that it is split into its constituent gasses, hydrogen and oxygen, or Brown’s gas,HHO, (which is water in its gaseous state).

This HHO is then sucked into the engine by the car’s vacuum system where it improves the combustion of the petrol, making it burn more efficiently. This increases the fuel economy of the car,cools the engine, increases engine power, decokes the engine improving engine life, and causes a reduction in polluting exhaust emmisssions.

In my own experience, the electrolyser has caused a 100% increase in fuel economy in my ex-wife’s 1991 Mitsubishi Lancer GLX, “Pinkie”, which has a 1500cc cyclone engine. It used to do less than 10km/litre on the highway but we have managed 19km/litre at times from it.

These saving may seem hard to beleive but they are true. The first time I got 19km/litre out of the Lancer, I thought the petrol pump had broken down because it only put about 4 litre of petrol in when I refilled it after 80km or so.

so there you go: why buy a new Prius for $50-60,000 when you can get just about as a good milage with the use of an electrolyser?
